1. Who is welcome at VELA VEGA?

It is important to us that ALL people feel welcome - no matter where someone comes from, what someone looks like, who someone loves and what someone believes in. The prerequisite for this is respectful and appreciative interaction between a mix of people who think differently and enjoy spending time together. We are a small community of volunteers, guests and workshop participants and we would be delighted if you would join us - to cook, eat, spend sociable evenings or go on excursions with us.

But VELA VEGA is also a participatory project. Permaculture is not just about gardening, but also about living with and in nature. So if you live in the city and would like to realize yourself in the garden or learn something about permaculture, would like to contribute your art or culture, or just want to do crafts, feel free!

2. what is the best way to get to you?

The fastest and cheapest way is by plane, the most ecological and comfortable way is by train and the most expensive and longest way is by car.

3. i would like to travel by plane or train. Which airport is closer to you - Palermo or Catania? Is there a good bus or train connection from there?

There is an ETNA bus every hour directly from Catania airport or bus station to Licata. It's a nice 2.5-hour journey, on which you can get your first impressions of this beautiful island. From the bus station in Licata one of us or our dear neighbor Franco will pick you up (for 10,-€), for more than 4 people you can also order a bus cab.

We will also be happy to help you book your flight and send you the bus timetable in advance if you wish. You can buy tickets for the ETNA bus from Catania either in advance at www.checkmybus.com or directly at the bus shelter at the airport or bus station in Catania.

The journey from Palermo is a little more complicated, you first have to take the airport bus to Palermo bus station and then take the ATA bus, usually via Agrigento, to Licata. The journey then takes 3.5 hours and the bus only runs 3 times a day.

4. if I arrive in Catania late in the evening by plane and fly back very early, is there still/already a bus?

The last bus to Licata leaves at 8 p.m. and the first at 7 a.m. It is therefore advisable to book an overnight stay in Catania for the first and last day if you land or take off before or after this time. For the return flight, also take into account the 2.5 hour bus ride and that you have to be at the airport at least 2 hours earlier.

5. do I need a car with you? Where is the best place to book a rental car? And can I park with you?

VELA VEGA is very remote, so the nearest towns of Lictata, Gela or Butera can ONLY be reached by car. Even if you want to make excursions to Agrigento, the Scala dei Turchi or Piazza Armerina, it is advisable to book a rental car.
There are several car rental companies at the airport that you can book from home, but there is also a car rental company in Licata at the Porto Touristico.
We have parking spaces for 6 vehicles, whether car or van, which we provide free of charge.

6. i would like to come by with the caravan. Is it possible to park here and perhaps also use the bathroom and charge my technical equipment?

In front of the VELA VEGA you can stand directly in the dunes with a view of the sea. But there is also the possibility to park a van directly on the property, the bathroom and sockets, as well as WLan, you can use at any time for a donation.

7. do you have a working WLan?

We provide free WiFi for all guests and visitors.
The WLan is unlimited and also sufficient for Zoom calls (approx. 105Mbps).

8. can I borrow bicycles from you?

We have two fat e-bikes that we provide for a donation. However, you can only ride around the settlement of Tenutella without danger, a further route to Licata or Gela is too dangerous, as these towns can only be reached via a trunk road.

9. how far is it to the sea?

It is 3.16 minutes on foot. If you walk VERY slowly, you will need 5 minutes on foot, even from the campfire on the beach the walk can seem very long. Normally, however, you can reach the water in 3 minutes for the 200m.

10. do you have beach loungers and parasols and do I need to bring a beach towel? What about yoga mats?

In each apartment you will find parasols as well as beach loungers, which can be used both in the garden and on the beach. There are large towels on each bed, which you are welcome to take to the beach, but you should shake them out well after use.
We also have yoga mats, but only the basic version.

11. do I need to bring bed linen and towels?

Bed linen is included in the price. Towels can be rented for an extra charge of € 3, but we ask you not to take the towels with you to the beach, but there are beach towels on each bed. If they are not enough for you or need to be washed in between, you can take them to the next wash for €3.

12. what about catering on site?

There is a kitchen with a fridge in each of the two apartments where you can prepare your meals. There are also communal kitchens for the rooms, which have a basic supply of vinegar and oil, spices, flour and sugar and of course coffee. If you come by rental car, you are welcome to stock up on groceries in the supermarkets before you arrive.
Otherwise, we go to the weekly market once a week and also to the supermarket in Licata and buy plenty of food so that nobody goes hungry during the day and nothing stands in the way of cooking and eating together in the evening. There are also very good restaurants and pizzerias in Licata that we like to visit and you are welcome to join us.

13. how do you define community?

“In sociology and ethnology, community refers to a manageable social group whose members are closely connected to each other through a strong sense of ”we" - often over generations. The community is considered the most original form of living together and the basic element of a society." This means that we live together for a limited period of time, help each other, go on excursions together, cook and eat together.

14. are there house rules at VELA VEGA?
